Effingham Hospital Selects MDG Medical

EFFINGHAM HOSPITAL SELECTS MDG MEDICAL FOR MEDICATION DISPENSING SOLUTION

April 18, 2008 – Cleveland, OH – Effingham Hospital, one of the nation’s fastest growing Critical Access Hospitals, recently selected MDG Medical, Inc. as the supplier of choice to upgrade and replace the hospital’s leased medication management system. The Springfield, Georgia hospital chose MDG, a leading provider of medication administration solutions, based on strict criterion of superior technology capabilities and cost efficiency.

With the lease on an alternative medication administration system nearing its term, Effingham solicited HomeTown Health, LLC to recommend a supplier. HomeTown Health is a coalition of 55 rural and small hospitals, as well as 50 business partners throughout Georgia. HomeTown Health, which recognized Effingham with the 2007 Hospital of the Year Award for best practice achievements, suggested that Effingham contact MDG Medical. Following the needs assessment by MDG and several alternative suppliers, Effingham selected MDG’s replacement option, which not only exceeded the hospital’s requirement for a closed-loop medication management solution, but also did well within Effingham’s fiscal budget.

MDG, which specializes in servicing rural, critical access healthcare facilities, as well as smaller community hospitals installed the ServeRx™ system for Effingham’s emergency room and acute care operations. In the latter MDG added the Patient Care Module and the Bedside solution, which provided a Smart Cart, eMAR and bar coding right to the patient’s bedside. ServeRx delivers a comprehensive medication management solution from the point of prescription to the point of care at the patient’s bedside. The basic ServeRx system includes software controlled medication dispensing cabinets containing numerous drawers of varying size - each of which is dedicated to a particular type of medication and dosage. Cabinets offer advanced bar coding, biometric fingerprint identification and RFID technology, as well as user-friendly attributes such as touch screen monitors. Similarly, the Smart Cart™, which can either be a component of ServeRx or a stand-alone medication cart, is a mobile medication dispensing cart that provides the portability feature of the bedside solution. A nurse stocks the Smart Cart from the centrally-located supply cabinet and then wheels the secured medications to the patient’s bed for administration. Additionally, MDG was able to provide a seamless interface with Effingham’s HIS, especially a customized Order Entry interface that links all Orders Entry with the hospital’s (eMAR) electronic Medication Administration Record. In this manner, Effingham’s eMAR now captures all patient information from admissions through discharge including medications and supplies, physician’s orders and notes, and lab and test results. Consequently, all data on each inpatient is available 24/7 to hospital personnel responsible for patient care. In the Effingham emergency room, MDG’s system provides nursing staff immediate access to often used medications. With the pharmacy located a distance from the ER, the secure cabinet eliminates the inefficiency of transporting medications from a remote location. Furthermore, the system provides Effingham a vehicle for eMAR capture for emergency room patient care.

Ms. Norma Jean Morgan, Effingham CEO said, “We’re very pleased with the advanced technology features, especially the access to real time patient data provided by MDG’s customized Orders Entry interface. The bedside solution promotes nursing efficiency and maximizes patient safety. In fiscal terms, we’re realizing a 30% cost savings. This is even more significant when you factor in that our new contract with MDG includes the buyout of the lease on our previous system. Furthermore, we were only able to lease that system, while with MDG, we’ve gained the enormous benefit of owning the system at the end of our contract. We’re excited. Our partnership with MDG Medical helps facilitate our best practice initiatives and clearly supports our mission to provide access and delivery of quality, cost effective, community based healthcare to all the citizens of Effingham County.”
